Key Background:

Bursa Malaysia Bhd reported a significant 22.9% increase in net profit for the financial year ended December 31, 2024 (FY2024), reaching RM310.12 million, compared to RM252.38 million in the previous year. The surge was driven by robust performances across the securities, derivatives markets, and the data business.

Operating revenue grew by 27.8%, reaching RM757.7 million in FY2024, up from RM592.3 million in the previous year. Total revenue for the period stood at RM784.3 million, marking a notable increase from RM616.49 million.

The securities market saw an impressive 43.1% rise in trading revenue, reaching RM381.5 million, compared to RM266.6 million in FY2023. This growth was attributed to higher average daily trading value (ADV) for both on-market trades (OMT) and direct business trades (DBT), along with a 10% increase in trading velocity to 39% from 29% in FY2023. The additional three trading days in FY2024 further contributed to the revenue surge.

The derivatives market also performed strongly, with trading revenue climbing 27% to RM113.8 million, driven by higher volumes in crude palm oil futures and FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI Futures contracts. Bursa Malaysia’s data business saw a 15.1% growth in revenue, totaling RM78.3 million, primarily due to an expanding subscriber base. Additionally, the Islamic Market segment reported a 4.9% increase in operating revenue, reaching RM17.9 million, bolstered by the new Bursa Gold Dinar business.

Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar highlighted FY2024 as a robust year for Malaysia’s equity capital market, with the FBM KLCI rising by 12.9%. This success contributed to market capitalization exceeding RM2 trillion in May 2024 for the first time. Bursa Malaysia also led ASEAN in initial public offerings (IPOs), with 55 new listings raising RM7.4 billion.

The exchange declared a final dividend of 18 sen per share, along with a special dividend of 8 Sen per share, amounting to a total payout of RM210.4 million. Combined with the interim dividend, the total dividend for the year reached 36 sen per share, reflecting a payout ratio of 93.9%.
