India’s Coal Production Rose to 74.07Mn Tonnes in July

India’s coal output increased by 6.69 percent year on year to 74.07 million tonnes (MT) in July, the ministry announced on Thursday. 

According to a statement from the coal ministry, the country’s coal production in the same month of the previous fiscal year was 69.42 million tonnes. Cumulative coal dispatch increased significantly in July 2024, reaching 79.54 MT compared to 76.05 MT in July 2023, representing a growth rate of 4.58 percent. 

In a second statement, the ministry stated that vesting orders had been issued for ten strategically vital coal mines, indicating a considerable increase in the country’s coal production capacities. 

This effort, which includes one fully explored and nine partially explored mines, is expected to boost energy security and economic growth in the states of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh, according to the statement. 

Coal and mines minister G Kishan Reddy encouraged the selected bidders to prioritize expanding coal production and minimizing imports. The Ministry of Coal produced 74.07 million tonnes (MT) of coal in July 2024. This is up 6.69% from the previous year’s 69.42 MT for the same month. 

Coal India Limited (CIL) produced 55.04 MT in July 2024, up 2.54% from 53.67 MT in July 2023. Cumulative coal production (up to July 2024) increased by 321.45MT (Provisional) in FY’ 24-25 compared to 292.80 MT in FY’ 23-24, representing a 9.78% increase. 

Cumulative coal dispatch increased significantly in July 2024, reaching 79.54 MT from 76.05 MT in July 2023, representing a growth rate of 4.58%. The cumulative coal dispatch (up to July 2024) amounted at 341.61 MT (Provisional) in FY’ 24.25, compared to 316.54 MT over the same period in FY’ 23-24, representing a respectable 7.92% increase.
